page breaks and printing

V

Vihana

Second time to post--no reply to first and I really need
assistance. I've read everything & searched a lot finding
no answers.
(1) Page breaks do not occur auomatically in Normal View.
(2) In Print Preview view, only one page appears and I
must manually insert a page break for the rest of the
document to appear, and do this page by page.
(3) Often, only the first page of a doc will print. I
don't know exactly why (or when) this happens but it's is
a big problem.
Please advise.

Hi Vihana,

Page breaks do not appear in normal view unless you click on the Show/hide
button ¶.

Please post any further questions or followup to the newsgroups for the
benefit of others who may be interested. Unsolicited questions forwarded
directly to me will only be answered on a paid consulting basis.

Hope this helps

Do you mean that in Normal View, without enabling "Show,"
I won't see page breaks? This wasn't the case in my
previous Word (before I started using this version, in
Office XP). But..okay, so ..could you help with the rest
of my problem/questions?
Why do I have to "force" the pages to appear in Print
View, and why does only the first page print...happens
many times, but not always. Very very frustrating.
I have no one else to ask...but here. I've search the
FAQ's and so on and combed thru the MVP site as well.
Also spent time looking thru printer things.

Hi Vihana,

No, I now realise that what I said is not correct. In Normal View, the page
breaks should appear as a dotted line across the screen.

Does this happen with all documents, or just a particular document?

Have you tried viewing a document that exhibits the problem on another
computer?

Please post any further questions or followup to the newsgroups for the

Hi Doug,
Let me clarify again what the problem is. The problem is
with the Offcie XP Pro > Word that I recently installed,
and it has occured from day one.
(1) Line breaks do not occur auotmatically. They must be
forced with Insert. This is for any view. After I Insert
them, they do appear.
(2) In Print view, only page 1 appears...every time I go
to Print view. I must force the other pages by using
Insert again.
(3)Often I cannot print beyond the first page no matter
what I do...even if I indicate the page number. SOmetimes
I can. I think this is related to the above points.
If you don't know how to solve this, where can I go for
an answer? I am a teacher working on daily work at home,
very upset.
Thank you.

I have no idea what is causing your problem. If you have not been able to
test one of the documents on another computer, send one to me and I will see
how it behaves.

Hi Vihana,

Take a look at the column formatting (select Columns from the Format menu)
If the number of columns is set to 2 and the width of the first column is
equal to the width between the margins and there is no entry in the fields
for the width between the columns or for the second column, the document
will not appear to have more than one page. If you reduce the number of
columns to 1, the problem goes away.

How does one get a document into that state? Word will not let me set
a column narrower than 1/2 inch.
