Page Number Errors

I am setting up a multi-section document with page
numbering. I've directed that each sections page numbers
run continuously from the preceding section. It works
great, except that the page following 119 is 697, and I
can't understand why that is happening. I've tried
deleting and re-inserting the page number, but the program
insists that this is page 697. I've also switched
to "start numbering at," which works, but then I'll have
to redo everything by hand if there are changes earlier in
the document. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Most likely you have an "invisible" section before the one that wants to
start with 697. Try this:

1. View | Header and Footer and go to the section that starts with page 697.
Note what the section number is. Call it x.

2. Click Show Previous on the Header and Footer toolbar. Note what section
you arrive at. My guess is it will be x-2.

What this means is that there is probably a Continuous section in the middle
of a page that doesn't have a header or footer, so you can't access its page
numbering through the header/footer. There are two ways around this.

1. Insert a temporary page break in the middle of the Continuous section,
View | Header and Footer, then Format Page Number to change the numbering
from "Start at [whatever]" to "Continue from previous section," then delete
the page break.

2. With the insertion point in the Continuous section, do Insert | Page
Numbers, click Format..., correct the numbering problem, OK, then Close (not
OK).
