Page number increases or decreases by 1 when converted to a PDF

Windows XP; Office 2002; Acrobat 5.05

User has 400 + page document that he converts to a PDF
via PDF Writer. The Word document has page 1 of 492. The
PDF has page 1 of 493.

Why does this happen and what can I do to correct it?

You probably have a page that is too tightly paginated. Try
micro-fiddling your page layout specs vertically.
