PAGE NUMBER ISSUE

XP/2003

I am inserting page numbers in a document. These begin are in the third
section of the document. I select page numbers from the Insert menu, and in
the Page Numbers dialog box the "Show Number on the First Page" box is NOT
selected. Nevertheless page 1 of the section shows and prints "1."

Activate the header/footer area. Then select and delete the page number from
the first page header (or footer).

Stefan,

Thanks for responding. I am embarrassed that I misrepresented the issue. I
originally said, The Show Number on the First Page" box is NOT
selected. Nevertheless page 1 of the section shows and prints "1."

The problem is exactly the opposite. The "Show Number on the First Pate"
box IS selected, but the number one does not appear on that first page.
Numbers 2-64 are there, but not number 1. I'm stuck because the Show Number
box is checked but the number is not showing.

If you've enabled "Different first page," then you've taken matters into
your own hands and overridden Word's automatic numbering. You'll need to
insert the page number in the First Page Header/Footer manually (using the
Insert Page Number button on the Header and Footer toolbar). This is
actually the preferable way to insert page numbers in any but the simplest
document, anyway.

Thank you both for helping.
