page number orientation for multiple sections

Darrin

I have a word 2000 document(my thesis) with section breaks.
Some sections are portrait while others containing
large tables are in landscape. The pagination is
continuous throughout the document but i want to change the
orientation of the page numbers in the landscape sections.
Presently, in portrait orientation the page numbers print
in the bottom right hand corner. Word is also placing the
numbers of the landscape pages in the bottom right hand
corner when you view the page in landscape. In other words
they are in the top right and rotated CCW 90 degrees when
viewed in portrait. I want the landscape pages to be
numbered bottom right hand corner when the pages are bound
and viewed in portrait. sorry if this is confusing. A
possible solution has been equally confusing and
frustrating for me. Any detailed solution to this
conundrum is most welcome. Thanks

G'day "Darrin" <[email protected]>,

using a table cell or text box allows you to rotate text through 90
deg.

See http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/Formatting/LandscapeSection.htm. If you
have already read this and are confused, then start with the article Doug
recommended. The problem is going to be that you've used Insert | Page
Numbers. You'll need to remove those numbers (or move and rotate them,
*after* unlinking the sections as detailed in the above-referenced article)
and replace them with numbers in the header/footer.

If all you have is page numbers (no other footer text), then moving and
rotating may be your best approach. Numbers inserted via Insert | Page
Numbers are placed in a frame, and it is an undocumented fact that (in Word
2002 at least, and I believe in Word 2000 as well) the Format | Text
Direction command works in frames. So you could drag the page number frame
to the position where you want it, resize it to accommodate a number going
the other direction, and then rotate the text 90 degrees in the appropriate
direction. But note that you *must* unlink the landscape section from the
portrait sections preceding and following it so that you don't affect the
page numbers there.
