Page number shading

Hope someone can help -- recently, Word has started shading in gray all page numbers inserted as either headers or footers. (Insert | Page numbers command) What's really odd is that all older documents also show this shading when opened, although the problem did not exist at the time page numbers were inserted into those documents. This most annoying and is driving me nuts as I can't find either an explanation or a way to correct it. Deleting all page numbers from all documents is not practical. Can someone help? Using Word 2000, Win98. Thank you!

Tools>Options>View and change Field Shading from "always" to "never" or
"when selected."
