I want to use a dash, nunber, dash rather than a plain number. I found a way

Can't you insert a dash before and after the number in the text box?

Yes, that can be done on the master page if you want all pages numbered.
But if you specify no number on page 1, then page 1 has no number but has
the two dashes. All other pages are OK.

Physically draw a rectangle around the dashes, white fill, no line. This will cover
the dashes when you print.

OK, it worked using a text box with white fill.

Thaks very much Mary and Ed for helping. BTW I found what I was looking
for. In WORD, in numbering pages of a document with "insert/page numbers"
one also has the option to format the numbers. Not so in PUBLISHER.
