Page numbering a novel

I want to start the body of the book on page one.Of course a title,
copyright,dedication and blank page precede the first page of text and
all my attempts to make the first page of text page one have failed.
Would some generous soul walk me through this?

The main trick is to start a new section for the body of the book.
(You will probably want one for each chapter to guarantee the heads are
recto)

Insert È Break È Section È Odd Page
View È Header & Footer
Put the cursor in whichever
Insert È Page numbers..
then fight with the format sub-panel till you are happy.

Depending on which version of Mac Word you are using, try the help with
a search term like "Start page numbering with 1 after the first page"
