Page numbering dilemma

I've been asked to solve a page numbering problem in a Word 2007 document. In
the form that I received it, a particular page appeared in the TOC as page
79. However, this page follows page 88. I found that the page number function
had been edited to start numbering from that point at page 79. So I changed
the setting so that the page numbering should be continuous from the previous
section. When I did this and clicked OK, the page number in the document took
on the correct value, that is, 89. The problem now is that when I save the
document, then close and reopen it, the numbering at that point starts at 0.
When I go into the page numbering function, I see that it has reset itself so
that numbering starts at 0. When I reset it to be continuous with the
previous section, the same thing happens as before -- it appears to take on
the correct value, but then reverts to 0 after saving and reopening. I've
read several of the postings here and tried to apply the suggested fixes, but
nothing seems to have an effect. I even tried deleting what appeared to be
unnecessary section breaks and ensuring that all page numbering was set to
"continuous," but nothing seems to help. Any suggestions? Thanks very much
for your help.

Thanks for your offer. I am waiting for a response from the person who
provided the document to me regarding whether it would be ok for you to view
it -- there may be nondisclosure issues involved.
