page numbering feature

Page numbering feature not operating. Can add page numbers when using
headers/footers but when I move cursor out of the header on the screen, the
header/footer and page number disappear. Screen reverts to a single blank
page and I am unable to use the sidebar to move up and down in the page. No
idea why this has happened. Hope someone can help. Many thanks.

Try selecting print preview.

It would also help a lot of you could tell us what program you are using
and what version (Like Microsoft Word XP)
