page numbering in appendices of document

I have a document with 130 pages in the main section and about 100 more pages
in nine appendices. Page numbering in the main sections works fine. I need
the appendices to number as A-1 through A-10; B-1 through B-7; etc. Is there
a way to get this formatting?

Maybe I'm just dense, I read the links, but I still can't get the lettering
to come first. This format is required for the report. The sections in the
main body are numbered as "1-1 through 1-12" and "2-1 through 2-16" etc. The
appendices are labeled in a "heading 1" style so the formatting available is
either "10-1 through 10-10" etc. (because the last section of the document
was "9" or if I select lettering, I get "10-A", which is backwards of the
"A-1" I need AND it's still on what it thinks is Chapter 10.

You need to be numbering the appendixes A, B, C. Which means that you have
to allocate a separate heading style for the appendix titles and include the
numbering of that heading level in the page numbers in that section.

I'll give this a try when I go back to work on Monday. Thank you so much for
your patience.

I too am having this problem - I'm savvy on the ways of Heading styles and
page numbering and all of that...
But I had a heading style, based on Heading 1, called Appendix Heading to
use for my (surprise surprise) Appendix Headings.
When I try to do the page numbering on those Appendices to include the A or
B for Appendix A or B and then the - 1 (for page 1 of Appendix A, e.g.), it
does not give me the option of my specialized Appendix Heading style. My only
choices are Heading 1 thru Heading 6 (or 9 or something).

I the past I think I did use one of the later Heading styles (6 or 9) and
tweaked it to be formatted the same as Heading 1, plus "Appendix A: ..." in
front of it... but I'm working in someone else's template which they won't
allow me to change like that.

Any work-arounds?
Why doesn't word just simply offer up ALL styles in the dropdown list of
heading styles it lets you choose from to precede the page number? Or why
doesn't it offer it as a Field option we could insert.
Quite annoying - especially when it comes to the Table of Contents!

Hi Nicole,

Not sure whether it is mentioned in Shauna's article, but you can put in the
AutoNumbering of your "Appendix Heading" style without the typed text
("Appendix") using
{STYLEREF "Appendix Heading" \n \t}
(Instead of the \n, the switches \r or \w would also work for you. The
important switch is \t to suppress the typed text)

That is, you'd have this in the footer:
{STYLEREF "Appendix Heading" \n \t}-{PAGE}

You'd need a different section for the appendix, though. There is no way to
get that numbering with a simple {page} field, I think.

Regards,
Klaus
