Page numbering problem (first page only)

I thought I had page numbering sussed but obviously not. I have a small
document with about 4 pages. The first three are portrait and the last is
landscape and contains a table which fills the page.

I have inserted page numbers using the view header/footer method then
clicking the page numbering icon. I don't want the first page numbered so I
clicked 'different first page' in page setup. Now! Surprise, surprise! The
first page is still numbered.

This has caused me an hour or two of trouble! I have deleted all the page
numbers, started again, and I still cannot get my document NOT to display a
page number on the first page. I have tried using different methods such as
the insert page numbers method and I have checked that all my footers are
linked up using the 'same as previous button'.

Does anyone have any idea what I could be doing wrong??!

Did you use Page Numbers from the Insert menu? If so, you need to clear the
check box for "Show number on first page." It's usually more satisfactory,
however, to insert numbers directly in the header/footer using the Insert
Page Number button on the Header and Footer toolbar. Try deleting the framed
numbers you've already got and then starting from scratch with these. Note
that unless you disable "Different first page" for the landscape setting (or
unlink the sections), you'll have no page number on that page, either, since
it will be the first page of a section. If you need a portrait page number
on this page, see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/LandscapeSection.htm

Many thanks. In the end I deleted the landscape section then put it back in.
After that the page numbering seemed to work ok so I don't really know what
went wrong with that document!
