Page numbering

Dave J.

I am trying to insert page numbering in this format:

First page should have no page number.
The second through fourth pages should be numbered
"i, ii, iii".
The fifth page through the rest of the pages should
be numbered "1,2,3,4..."

My understanding is that I need to use "Section
Break" formatting, but I can't seem to get it to
work properly. Thanks for any help!

Hi Dave

You don't need a section break for the first to fourth pages - just use
'different first page', set the page number format to i, ii, iii and set the
page numbering to start numbering at 0. In the header or footer, insert a
page number on the 'Section 1' header or footer, but not on the header or
footer marked 'First page'.

You do need a section break between page 4 and 5. In the Section 2 (page 5
on) start the page numbering at 1, and set the format to the 1,2,3 form.

For more detailed instructions, see

Thanks for the information, but "different first page"? I
don't see that option in any of the pull-down menus. I am
using Word 2002.

I've tried various times, but I still get the physical
second page starting with "ii", when it should be
just "i", to indicate the first numbered (Roman numeral)
page. Trying to change one page to "odd page" section
break also changes more than just that page; also seems
to add a blank page in front of the page I am trying to
reformat.

Did you look at the article Margaret referred you to? "Different first page"
is on the Layout tab of Page Setup.

Of course I found the "Different first page" choice just
AFTER I posted back to this board. Sorry 'bout that!

Yes, I read the articles. They seem a little complicated,
but I'll get the hang of it, I suppose. Thanks for
everyone's help!
