Need help! Would like to create a footer with the numbering sequence as S-1, S-2, S-3, etc. The letter in front of the number needs to be a field so that a TOC can be generated

I think you'll have to fudge this. Have a look at
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/numbering/ChapterNumber.htm

and use an otherwise unused Heading style to set up a hidden "numbered
chapter" S ?
