page numbering

How do I format page numbers so that I have no page number on a title page,
the characters i, ii, iii on a table of contents,etc, and 1-50 starting at
the introduction of a paper to the end? Thank you

You will need a Section Break between the title page and the table of
contents and another one between the table of contents and the page on which
the Introduction starts.

Don't insert any page numbering into the first section that contains the
title page.

Insert page numbers into the tables of contents pages and using the Format
page numbers button on the Headers and Footers toolbar, format the page
numbers to start at 1 and set the format for the page numbers i, ii, iii.

In the main body of the document, insert the page numbers and using the
Format page numbers button, set them to start at 1 as well.

Complete instructions at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NumberingFrontMatter.htm, but note that
your title page is page i even though no number is printed on it. This is
publishing convention.

For the numbering you describe (done properly), you will need a single
section break between the front matter and the rest. Select "Different first
page" for Section 1 and leave the First Page Header/Footer blank. Numbering
in the Header/Footer will begin at ii.

Dear Doug,

Thanks for the comment. However, I cannot figure out how to do a section
break. I have Word XP and it does not give me the option under insert break
on the menu. Do you know perhaps what I could do now, or where I can find
that option. Thank you.

The Insert | Break dialog should include:

Break types
* Page break
* Column break
* Text wrapping break

Section break types
* Next page
* Continuous
* Even page
* Odd page

You want "Next page."

I have tried this, and I currently have three sections (title page,
TOC/Aknowledgements and Rest op document), the rest of the document contains
page numbers in the standard format (i.e. 1,2,3), the second section contains
page number in the i.ii,iii format but the title page displays a 0 which I
can't get rid of. If I delete it, the other sections also lose their page
numbering...
Can anyone help me?

You have to unlink the first page header (or footer, depending on
where you put the page numbers) in the second section. To unlink,
choose View | Header and Footer, and click to de-activate the Same As
Previous button on the Header and Footer toolbar.

After you've unlinked headers (footers), you can delete the contents
of the first page header (footer) without affecting the others.
