Page Numbers are all zero

I have a document written by Word 2000, which after being
updated by Word 2003 will not display correct page
numbers in Word 2002. The page numbers are all zero.

The problem occurs only in a specific footer where the
page number is embedded in a table cell. Once the
problem occurs, the page number element never works again
(for that document under Word 2002), even if the element
is deleted and re-added to the document. The Word 2003
display of the same document appears correctly.

Anyone ever seen this and know of a corrective measure?
I have a large body of documents and templates which were
distributed with this time-bomb and I cannot recall them
to change the footer.
