Page numbers are not showing up

I typed several pages in a Word 97 document and then decided to add page numbers. For some reason, the page numbers do not show up on pages that I adjusted the top and bottom margins after adding the numbers. Does anyone know why this happens? How can I fix it so that all page numbers show, even after adjusting margins?

I read over the info, but it doesn't seem to apply to this situation. My top and bottom page margins (in portrait) are both within printable areas. My top margin is at .9" and my bottom is at .8". Does that mean that extending my margins pushes out the footer which contains my page number? And if so, would the page numbers again appear if I changed the margins back to 1"?

The top and bottom margins are not the relevant ones. It's the footer margin
that may need to be changed.
