Page numbers are present in the document, but do not print or show ina PDF file or print preview

I have Word 2008 for Mac. The page numbers in my dissertation appear in theWord document, but do not print, show-up in print preview, or appear in a PDF file of the document. This just started happening last night ... after many drafts that did print with page numbers. This document is my dissertation! Can anyone help?

Any chance you could have changed the top and bottom margins so that
the footer is now out of the printable area?? Or the "From edge" setting
of the footer?
