page numbers go crazy. pagination?

I have a very long document, about 110 pages. When I add page numbers to it, the section on the bottom, where it tells you how many pages thier are, go's nuts. it rapidly starts increasing page numbers all the way though 9999. it finally stops and shows 1/****. when I press escape, and try and get it to stop, word tells me that it has to continue pagination. What is pagination, but more importantly, how can i get it to stop the craziness. I've tried everything i can think of. I just want page number until page 110. Any help would be much appreciated. This project is due soon and I'm at my wits end.

Hi =?Utf-8?B?amVzc2U=?=,
I have a very long document, about 110 pages. When I add page numbers to it, the

rapidly starts increasing page numbers all the way though 9999.Sound like this document has a bit of damage in the header/footer storage space in the
binary file format. Unfortunately, you don't mention which version it is?

How about going to File/Save As, saving to RTF format, closing, then opening the RTF
file. With any luck, that will "shake out" the bad voo-doo without losing too much
formatting.

If that doesn't help, try round-tripping to non-filtered HTML (assuming your version
supports this).
Next to try would be Word 6/95 format.
Finally, Word 2.0 foramt.
