Page numbers on Word v.10

D. J.

Hi,
I'm having a problem with my v. 10 of MicroSoft Word. It doens't seem to
have the page number option on it. I've tried doing what is suggested in
the Help window---go to Insert, click on Page Number and it should let you
specify which page the numbering should begin. My MS Word doesn't have the
Page Number option under Insert. In fact, I can't find the page number
option anywhere. I can number document pages if I do it as a header or
footer, but then I don't have the option of not numbering the first page of
the document. Can anyone out there help me?

Thanks for getting back to me. It's not that I don't want the first
page not to print. I do. That's not the problem. My problem is that
I don't want the first page to be numbered, and the dialog box that
according to "Help" (which isn't) is supposed to appear when I go to
insert and gives me the option of adding page numbers simply isn't
there. In my older Mac version of Word, when I went to Insert, there
was an option clearly marked Page Numbers. Whenever I clicked on to
it I could choose several different things that had to do with
numbering pages---including suppressing the page number on the first
page. It's gone. It doesn't exist on my newer Word 10---even though
the "Help" button says it's one of the ways to add page numbers.

Is it simply not on Word 10 or have I done something to lose it? And
if I've lost it, how do I get it back?

It's there on mine, and I can't make it go away. Maybe there is some
magic for deleting items from the main menu bar menus, but I can't find
*that* in help ;-)
anyhow the bit I said beforeshould let you sneak round the menu problem.

Maybe someone who knows how to hack main menu items could join in. I'd
like to know, for all sorts of perverse reasons.

I can't check the first page check box because I have no Page Number
dialog box any more. That's the problem. It has disappeared. When
I open Insert on the menu bar all I have are the following items to
choose from and in this order:

Page Break
Section Break
Table . . .
Footnote . . .
Comment
Date and Time . . .
Symbol . . .
Bullet
Index and Tables . . .
Text Box
File . . .
Picture
Drop Cap---this is grayed out so I can't choose it
Object . . .
Bookmark . . .
Hyperlink . . .
Movie . . .

There is no Page Number option available.

Just went back and tried your suggestion about resetting the menu bar.
Didn't work. Still no page number option.

Are you sure you selected the item "Menu Bar" in the dialog's
textbox, not the menu bar at the top of the screen before you
clicked Reset?

If so, I have no idea what has happened to your application - that
should restore it from defaults stored within the app. Perhaps try
reinstalling? All I can tell you is that I have it.

First, though, I'd recommend running the Disk Utility application
(in the Utilities folder of the Applications Folder) and running Fix
Permissions from the First Aid tab.

Yes. The "menu bar" item I selected was the one in the dialog's
textboxy, not the menu bar at the top of the screen. I give up. I'll
just learn to deal with what I've got. It's too frustrating
otherwise. Gosh, I hate MicroSoft products! Thanks for your time. I
appreciate your suggestions.

Hi D.J.

I don't know if this helps, but there are two completely different schemes
of page numbering for word:
1. Choose "Page numbers" from the Insert Menu. You will get little frames
with numbers in them. Printing on the first page is controlled by a checkbox
in the dialog box of this item.
2. Page numbers in the headers or footers of the document. These are small
additional parts (like little pages with their own rulers and formatting).
The printing on the first page is a property of the header or footer of the
first page, which is only available if you choose them different for the
first page. This is a document format property, available under
Format -> Document -> Layout: Check "Different first page".

I hope this helps.

All the best from Germany,
Thomas

Thanks for the suggestions, Thomas. I'd love to be able to try the
first one, but that's the whole problem---my Insert Menu doesn't have
a "Page Numbers" option any more. Don't know what happened to it. It
was there. Now it's gone. I've tried resetting the menu bar to the
default setting. Nothing happens.

The only way I can add page numbers now and supress numbering the
first page of the document is to do the whole header thing. It's a
pain, but at least it works. For now, anyway.

I appreciate your help.

Hi
Regarding your problem with the menu bar. I know this was a problem
with 98, but take a shot . look at your view menu and see if it has
an option for view (previous version of word) menu bar. If it does,
click off and restart the program

Hi D.J.,

I suggest you try testing your Preferences as follows:

1. Quit all Office Applications.

2. Navigate to your ~/library/preferences/Microsoft folder

3. Delete the Microsoft Component Preferences and Word Settings (10)
files

4. Empty the Trash. Or you can rename the files in step 3, and omit
emptying the trash; the key is to ensure that the file goes out of service
instead of hanging around.

These files will be re-created when you restart Word.

Hope this helps.

Oh my gosh! You are a genius! I went to View and looked for an
option for a previous version of Word. I saw an option that said Word
5.1 menu. I clicked on it and BINGO. My page number option has
returned! Thanks so much!!!
