page numbers too high on page

I am using XP and Word2000,

I have used this thousands of times and just encountered a problem
I've not seen before.

I am trying to print a 20 page document (.doc) that I wrote, I
inserted the page numbers as always.
When printing out the document the page numbers are much higher on
the page on the right hand side, and also with each new page printed
it starts higher and higher losing the top few lines.

What is the problem here,

Thank You

Did you use Insert | Page Numbers to insert the page numbers, or did you use
the Insert Page Number button on the Header and Footer toolbar? If the
latter, do you have "Different odd and even" enabled? Are there other any
fields in the header (StyleRef, for example)?

I used the Insert/page numbers from the top tool bar.

I was printing a 20 page doc file and on page 8 it suddenly started
doing this, printing at the very top of the page, the page numbers on
the bottom right were now higher and every page after was starting to
print higher and higher.

The only difference in the computer at all since the last time I
printed something without a problem is I did the April windows updates
AND I got the Lexmark ink cartridge re-filled. This is the first time
I've ever used a refilled ink cartridge before.

Could the ink cartridge cause this.

Thank You

It is unlikely to be filling the ink cartridge - though it could still be an
unrelated mechanical fault with the printer: I think this would be a bit
more obvious though rather than starting consistently at page 8.

A couple of suggestions: Go to File, Page Setup and make sure that the paper
size and margins (both page margins and the Header and Footer margins) and
set up consistently for the Whole Document.

If those settings are OK, toggle on the SHowAll command so that you can see
all non-printing and hidden characters and turn on View Page Boundaries and
go through checking the Headers to make sure that nothing has been
accidentally added or changed. Use Print Preview to display 2 pages side by
side as this will show any misalignment of the Headers more easily.

I should clear up the fact that it originally started on page 8 of
the 20 page document,
From that point on I tried to only print page 8 or 9 and same
problem, then I tried to print other smaller doc files and they also
were messed up.
So from the time it started messing up with that one doc, then
everything I now try to print is messed up,
Page numbers are not where there supposed to be, and it seems the
printing is always starting way to high on the page, then the next
page is even higher cutting off the top few lines and that page number
will even be higher on the bottom. The bottom part of the page is
blank then goes to the next page even more messed up.

I didnt do anything odd with the page breaks either, I never do. I
just set up margins in page setup as always and then use the insert
date and page numbers.

I will try what you suggested and see what is going on.

Other then the refilled ink, I did the Windows updates for April the
other day, and now system restore wont restore past the day I did the
updates either.

Dont know if there is anything funny about the updates, I havent
read anything funny with them except the April updates messes up some
audio and third party programs, they have a hot fix for it which I
installed and that did fix the real-tek audio problem.

Is there any chance you have done something in the template (normal.dot?)
from which they were created?

Maybe the printer driver has slightly corrupted? Check that you have the
latest driver for your printer and delete and reinstall the printer.

I did reinstall the printer driver and I deleted normal.dot and
Word made the new one, I even reinstalled Word.

Everything was working fine until I did the Windows April updates,
I'm starting to think there is something there with that.
