Page numbers with decimals in footer

Hi,
I have a tedious document with various page numbering.
The first few pages are iv, v, vii, etc. After that it
goes to 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 2.0, 2.1, 3.0 and so on.
I FINALLY figured out how to make the page numbers differ
on the various pages, but I cannot for the life of me
figure out how to make the page numbers have decimals.
Any suggestions? I'm using Word 2002 on XP.
THANK YOU!

In the Format Page Number dialog, where you have presumably checked "Include
chapter number" in order to get the 1, 2, etc., select "period" as the
separator.

Yes I did that. Then I hit "OK" and get the following
message:

"There is no chapter number to include in the caption or
page number. To apply chapter numbers use the Bullets and
Numbering command on the Format menu and select a
multilevel list style that is linked to the Heading
styles."

So I tried that, and all it does is add a numbered bullet
to the page number. Obviously I'm not doing something
right?
