Page Numbers

I have a 1000 page doc. I inserted page numbers in the header and it works
fine as long as I do not print on both sides of the paper.

However, when I duplex print I need to show the first page of new
"Sub-Books" or "Chapters" on the right side (instead of the left side) of
the main book. Some chapters start on the right side, some chapters start on
the left side.

How do I get Word 2k to insert an empty page with a page-number, where
necessary?

How can I number the pages so that a new chapter always starts on the right
side?

It doesn't sound like a page numbering issue at all. What if you set up even/odd page section breaks between your chapters to control which side each chapter starts

Pardon my ignorance, but how do I set up even/odd section breaks to allow
for chapters? Right now, I do not know which chapters will start on the
right and which will start on the left side? Do all the pages on the right
side of a book start with an odd page number?

Conventionally, yes, all chapters start on odd page numbers. I assume you
have section breaks between your chapters--set those to be odd page section
breaks. Format | Document, Layout, drop down menu under Section Start lets
you change it after the fact.

Even numbers will be on the left side of a page layout and odd numbers will be on the right side of a page layout. Put in section breaks by Insert > Break and then click on the appropriate choice to left/right page break. But you would do this if you want to start a chapter by forcing it to one or the other. Thinking about it, if it doesn't matter if the chapter starts on either the left or the right side, just put in plain page breaks (same insert menu) before the chapter header just to be sure it falls on the next start of the next page.

Hi Sharon,

Please, I see that your heart is in the right place... But at least refer to
actual existing Word choices... There are no such things as left page breaks
or right page breaks.

You've gotten, piecemeal, most of the information you need. Here's a
summary:

1. You will need to insert a section break at the beginning of each chapter.

2. This will need to be an Odd Page break (Insert | Break | Section break
types: Odd page). If you have already inserted the breaks, you can go to the
Layout tab of Page Setup and change the section start to "Odd page."

3. This will force Word to insert a blank even page as need to fill out a
chapter that ends on an odd page. This page will be *completely* blank and
will not show up even in Print Preview unless you're displaying two pages.

If you need to have some text on the page (header/footer and "THIS PAGE
INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK" or the equivalent), see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/InsEvnPgEndChap.htm. But note that
this would *not* be usual for most books, which would have a completely
blank page.
