Hi, I am wondering if anyone knows how to switch the format of the page numbers in a single document. I am working on my dissertation and I need the first 4-5 pages in roman numerals (ii, iii, iv, etc.) and then the remainder of the paper in regular page numbers (1, 2, 3, etc.). Does anyone know how to do this b/c I can't figure it out. Thanks!

Hi,

it is slightly complicated, but if you follow the instructions, you should
do just fine. Place the cursor behind the last character on the last page
that needs the Roman numeral numbering, then click on Insert>Break>Section
Break (Next Page). You now have two sections, i.e. different subdivisions of
your document, which is important as Word bases its page numbering (among
other things) precisely on these sections. On the new page, insert a header
or a footer, depending on where you want the page numbers to appear) by
clicking on View>Header/Footer. Open the Formatting Palette (View>Formatting
Palette) and expand the Header and Footer section. Disable "Link to
previous", then click on the "Insert #" icon in the same location of the
Formatting Palette. You should now have a page number in your header/footer.
Click on the Format Page Number icon (# + pencil), choose your number format
and select "Start at 1", then click OK. Now move back to the first section
and insert a new page number into the header/footer and format it according
to your wishes (Note: this last step is only necessary if the numbering is
not already in place because of your previous efforts).

I hope everything's clear; if not, post back!

In order to vary anything the type of numbering you need to employ Section
Breaks in the doc. For what you describe this Help topic in Word should be
sufficient: Start page numbering on a different page
