Page #s in footer misbehaving

Word 2000 running in XP Pro SP3

For the first time since I can't remember when, Word is garbling the
simple "Page x of y pages" routine. It appears correctly on the
screen, but when printed the numbers start out like this:

1 of 1, 2 of 2, 3 of 3, 4 of 4, etc.

Any ideas? I haven't changed anything that I can remember, and have
always used the same method.
