When I start Word, there is no curseron the new document,
also, I get a message saying that word cannot display the
fonts because there is insufficient disc space or memory,
when therer is plenty of room. this just started
happening.

Try renaming the normal.dot template to oldnormal,dot and then start Word.
If the problems go away, there was some problem with the oldnormal.dot
template. If there are macros or autotext entries in it that you want to
retrieve, use File>Open to open oldnormal.dot and then select Macros from
the Tools menu and then Macro and then click on the Organizer button and
copy the them accross from oldnormal.dot to normal.dot
