I am using word 2002 in print layout, there are grey vertical lines at
something like 6 mm spacing.

Can somone tell me what they are and also how to turn them off.

Sounds like the drawing grid may be turned on. On the Drawing toolbar,
click Draw, then Grid. UNcheck the box for "Display gridlines on
screen" and click OK.
