page width view scaling

In previous editions of Word, selecting "page width" from
the drop-down toolbar magnification selector caused the
working area to occupy nearly the full width of the
display screen. In 2000 (9.0.3821 SR1), the page width
(as indicated by the horizontal ruler above the page)
occupies about 60% of the screen width. It correctly
indicates the paper size and margins I have set, but
previously they were scaled to the screen width. "100%"
and "page width" give identical behavior. It is true that
I can enter characters in the whole screen, going beyond
the page boundaries indicated in the ruler. Hope this is
clear. I'm using "normal" view, which I prefer. Is this
the designed behavior or an error?
Many thanks.

Are you sure "Page Width" is what you have selected? What you describe
sounds like 100% (or some near) zoom combined with "Wrap to window" on the
View tab of Tools | Options.

AHA! Thanks, Suzanne, I guess I had never noticed "wrap
to window" or played with it. It was selected: when I
turn it off, then I get the desired behavior, and
the "zoom page width" makes the text fill the entire
screen width. It's an odd function: usually turning wrap
on makes the line shorter. In this case, "window" must
mean screen width, not page width.
Much gratitude,
Mike

Yep, window is window width. If your window is maximized, you get that line
length, if it's a Normal window and you drag it narrower the text resizes
(just as it does in an HTML page or in Web Layout view).
