Pages corrupted

R

RV Daffin

I've recently added a new ISP and uploaded a site that has been running
without problem on my old site. The pages in question were generated by
saving word docs as htm docs. Now I get lots of ? marks in the blank areas
of the page.
I appreciate your time helping me solve this,

Word uses "Smart" quotes and apostrophes. If the server sets the
character set to UTF-8 in the HTTP headers then these characters will
display as "?".
Either replace the smart quotes etc. with ordinary characters, or
replace them with entities (character or number references), or ask
your host to change the HTTP header.

You need to do the pages in FrontPage, not Word.

slightly ot comments:

You may want to re-think your use of Java Hover buttons. Most user machines
these days do not have JVM installed and the user will see only gray boxes
unless they go to Sun's website and download and install Java Virtual
Machine.

Frames? Why?

Well the pages are generated originally in Word for mailing and copying, so
I saved them in HML format to save time. It was no problem with old ISP. Is
there any suggestions I can make to new ISP to make them display correctly?
If not then Word's ability to save as HTM is sort of useless.

It's not useless...just a tad sloppy.

Safer to copy/paste into FP as plain text, no formatting.

It shouldn't have anything to do with the ISP.
Saving word pages as htm is not necessarily designed for displaying on a web
site. If you look at all the crap it puts in the code, you should
understand why.

But, it's your choice. Best of luck ;-)

IMO, Word's ability to save as HTML *is* virtually useless.
As in my previous post, the HTTP headers delivered by your server
are:

Response Headers -
http://home.valornet.com/rud/webdocs/RUMC/RumcMainFrame.htm
Date: Thu, 01 Sep 2005 16:37:00 GMT
Server: Apache/2.0.46 (Red Hat)
Last-Modified: Thu, 25 Aug 2005 13:36:43 GMT
Etag: "107d468-2b1-1ea4f0c0"
Accept-Ranges: bytes
Content-Length: 689
Keep-Alive: timeout=10, max=500
Connection: Keep-Alive
Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8

200 OK

While the header "Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8" is there
you will have this problem. See my other post for suggestions.

I could not see the problem myself, your use of Java Hover buttons
prevents me from seeing anything other than the Home Page. IE6
displays a column of blue boxes where the buttons are supposed to be,
FireFox displays noyhing at all. There is no working navigation for
those users who do not have or allow Java to be used.
Also, the "background" image (RumcLogoWater4.gif) does not display in
FireFox.
