pagination formatting

I am processing a long document which requires changing the page number
formatting in several places. I insert breaks at the beginning of each new
section, but if I try to use a different page numbering format, the whole
document changes. I cannot make the section break inserts work for this
purpose.

Insert section breaks. In each section where you need a
different page number format, and in the following section, turn
off "same as previous" or "link to previous" (depending on which
version of Word you're using... sorry you didn't say) in the
header and footer. Then change the page number format.

In my experience (and to my surprise), a section break suffices both for
restarting numbering and for changing the number format (in the Format Page
Number dialog). But to change the number position in the header/footer, or
to omit the page number (or anything else) from the headers or footers of a
particular section, does require unlinking.

Thanks, I never noticed that before. Always learning new tricks
here. :)

It caused a real nuisance in my front matter article
(http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NumberingFrontMatter.htm) because I
had written that it was necessary to unlink the sections to change the
number format, and so the whole concept of unlinking was introduced fairly
early. But then someone pointed out that it wasn't necessary to unlink just
to change the number format, so I demoted the unlinking bit to a lot later,
which has caused a lot of trouble because people need to unlink to leave
headers and footers blank, and they often don't pick up on the rather subtle
bit about unlinking. I keep thinking I need to revise the article to make
that more prominent, but every time I reread it, I see that all the
requisite information is *there*, and I end up leaving well enough alone.
