Mike,

Right click the paper clip, and click "Hide." Or "Destroy permanently"
should you be so lucky as to have such an option. :)

i don't have the latter option and i have used 'hide', but i want a more
permanent cure. i have done this before and not seen it for years, but all
of the sudden it is back. thanks, mike allen

This should be pretty permanent. Did you recently install a office patch or
something? It might have reset the paper clip. It shouldn't come back for a
while.
