Paragraph interaction

I'm using WORD 2002 with an XP Operating System. When I use the enter key to create a new paragraph and then attempt to apply a numbering system using the tool-bar number application, WORD creates paragraph numbers for all the previous paragraphs. If I then do an undo it straightens itself out and only the numbered paragraph I want remains. Similarly, if I try to indent a numbered paragraph by using the tool-bar indent feature WORD renumbers all the previous paragraphs to the indented numbering system. If I then do an Undo, it straightens out all the previous paragraphs to what they should be and properly indents the number to the level I want for the paragraph. I have similar problems when I change the paragraph left-centering-right setting from one paragraph to another. WORD always corrects itself when I do an Undo
Any suggestions?
