Paragraph Mark icon does not change settings

Working within Word 2003, the paragraph markings are showing in the
document. We'd rather that they didn't. Unfortunately, clicking on the
Paragraph icon on the Standard toolbar does not have any affect.
I've logged on as a different user on this computer and the paragraph
markings do turn on and off correctly. I'm not sure why they aren't working
for this user.

Your thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
