Paragraph Mark vs. Paragraph Character

On a couple of occasions I've done a search and replace and selected
Paragraph character as the item to search for. Word puts the expected
symbol in the right place, but it doesn't create a new paragraph as I
expected. Paragraph mark actually gives me what I'm looking for, but I
can't figure out what the difference is between the two. Does anyone
know how they differ and why you would use paragraph character instead
of paragraph mark? Thanks,

There's something about this in the FAQ, but only instructions to get
the right result.
To my mind, that's a 'bug' that wasn't important enough (to MS) to
fix.
