paragraph symbols appear on saved and new documents

I have used word 2000 for some time and while i was
working on a document recently, paragraph symbols and
other usually hidden symbols appeared on the document i
was working on and appears on all saved and newly created
documents but not on the printed versions.
This is confusing to work with and i cannot remove the
previously hidden symbols.

The display of nonprinting characters is an environment setting; it is not
stored with the document. When you toggle off the display (as Doug has told
you how to do), it will be off for any document subsequently opened. For
some reasons why you might sometimes want to be able to see NPC (and an
explanation of what they all mean), see
