When I start a PowerPoint presentation, only part of a bullet appears. This

If I read this question correctly, you might want to check your placeholder
on the master slide. Go to View/Master and also to View/Ruler to turn on the
ruler.
On the master slide (View/Master), how are the carats for the bullets
aligned on the ruler? Hold down your CTRL key as you drag the carats. This
should help align the text far enough away that the full bullet can be
displayed.
Since this happens when you start a (new?) presentation, that would indicate
that the template has been affected. You'll want to make this "carat change"
on the appropriate template. If it's new blank presentations that are being
affected, you need to make a change to blank.POT or blank presentation.POT,
depending on your version of PPT.
I can't seem to make this happen here, but I believe I've actually seen it
happen before. Can't recall what font I was working with at the time,
though.
Or it could be a simple display issue. Try changing your hardware
acceleration.

Thanks for your input. I think I found the problem. When I was changing
font size and color the bullet would also change, so I put a space where the
first letter would go and that seems to have worked.

You may want to verify that this really works when your presentation is
running. If your bullet text is longer than one line and the bullet
entrances are animated, the text will show, but the bullet will not when the
presentation is played. (Pretty bizarre, I know, but it is the truth....)

If you build a slide which has a bulleted list and animate it, if one of the
list items is longer than a line and if that text starts with a space, when
you run the slide the text will show, but the bullet will not. For example:
o This is test text - this is more test text, this is even more test text
This is test text - this is more test text, this is even more test text (and
so on until it wraps to the next line on the slide)
(in other words: Bullet, space, long line of text)
If animated, will display during the slide show as:
This is test text - this is more test text, this is even more test text
This is test text - this is more test text, this is even more test text (and
so on until it wraps to the next line on the slide)
