password problem

Hello,

I've got a .dot file that users can access for mail merging. User1 can
access it from his laptop no problem. When anyone else on the network
attempts to access this file they are asked for a password. This template
has never been password protected. When I try to crack the password (I've
tried several different softwares to do this) they all say it's not password
protected. If I log on to any of the other machines on our network as
User1, the document will ask for a password. When I log on as any other
user to User1's laptop, I can access the document w/out being asked for a
password. All machine access this file are WinXP Pro w/ SP1, with Office XP
SP2 installed. Has anyone else ever seen anything like this?
