password protect folders on free space

R

Rob

I am posting this to try and help any NEW XP users and NEW web publishers
BOTH of which I am. I came her last week looking for a way to password protect
certain folders on my personal web page. I was quickly educated that this is an ISP
provided service. If you are like me and using a FREE webspace then you will find
that most ISP's don't support password protection on free space. Unless you are able
to write your own script, this is a problem. After a MAJOR ordeal I managed to get hold
of some script that protects one folder on my site, but it was a pain.
OK... to the point, I then by searching the XP help files, found that you can password zipped
or copressed files with built in XP functions. This knowledge would have made my life
ALLOT easier. I wish that some of the TECHIES here would have understood the point!
point being; password selected folders on my web site.
I'm sure some of them knew how to do this and could have put 2 and 2 together.
I hope this helps some newbies like me!

Glad you found a solution!

However that solution is not the same as password protecting pages or
folders with web site where you would expect users to your site to view the
content directly online in their browser.

If you had asked about protecting files that would be downloaded, then you
might have been provided a solution of using a protected zip file format or
a PDF, etc.

Thanks for the feedback.
However to most of the folks who visit
here and answer questions, Password
protecting a page or folder is just that.
keeping out people unless they have a
password and can log-in via a password panel
using the browser

Yes you can password protect using a compression
or zipping utility such as WinZip.
However, anyone can still download the zipped file.
They may not be able to open it, but they can download it.

Additionally, unless you're very crafty at creating
passwords, there are password cracking programs
out there that will open a password protected zip
file in about 5 minutes or less.

Hello Thomas,
Yes, that's what I'm looking --- can you PLEASE tell me how I can accomplish it?

This is my problem: I've tested some trial version of FTP programs and found only
SmartFTP can easily get my web site (URL) by first select a file name then choose
Copy URL and paste it to email body message area and send. Yes, I can apply CHMOD to all my files and folders so they could ONLY read it BUT every time I press CHMOD menu it always gives out my user name & password:
htp:// UserName:p[email protected]/web/images/happytime.htm

I've noticed others can sent their web sites without their password visible.

How is your way of doing it? I would like to know who really control my password for
not being visible? Is it my FTP program or the web site admin? etc.

You really did helped me before - - - THANKS! And I Really Appreciated It Very Much!

Rino

Just to be clear, what is it that you actually want to do or accomplish...

Do you want to limit access to certain pages or a folder within your web
site to specific users visiting your web site?

or

Do you want to make a copy of your web site and then send it to someone via
email?

Thanks for your input Steve, and you are right. Protecting a folde
is not the same as protecting web based data for a browser. Howeve
very early on I said that the point was to put info on my site for ver
specific viewers. To place a password protected folder on my site fo
those persons to down load and then open with a pre-determined passwor
suits that purpose just fine

thanks, Rob

Ah now I understand.
My apologies, as I misunderstood your original post.

Problem with the news group being a FrontPage one
is that I am preset to "think FrontPage" and usually not
a third party application.

For what you want to do, WinZip is an excellent choice.

Yes, your first part is absolutely correct --- I want only certain pages likes HTML extension created by FrontPage and the others files like sound, GIF and other images are saved together in a common folder. We've tested it worked when click open that htm file. Animation, sound & background stationery are all perfectly view in Browser.

What I want now is to hide my own password in that URL I sent to friends. I really don't know how others are doing it. Do you really gives out your own User Name and Password?

Rob,

I think we all saw the word "folder", which normal meant that you want to
protect specific content within the site for specific viewers, as folders
are never "downloaded" from a web site. Whereas if you have asked how to
download a file but only allow certain individuals to be able to open the
file once downloaded, you would have received different solutions.

First you really need to move to a low cost hosting solution, not a free one
that fully support the FP extensions, subwebs and unique permissions.

You would create a subweb on the live site, open the subweb directly in FP,
and then you would be able to assign a unique login for accessing the subweb
content which would be difference from your normal login info used to author
your web site, then you would publish your content to the subweb via FP.
Then you would give those individual that you want to have access, the login
info.

Hi Thomas,
I got your most valuable tip again - - - Thank You! Now, I know a little.
But, and I'm not questioning your helping me. Can I just stick to my free online
storage because it is very big space available and my friends can really open it

a work-around by following your second parts of approach that is to open in FP
then do and complete the remaining works there? Can FP go directly to my free
web site without using my FTP program software?

Another thing, I would rather not to saved in FT extension because all my friends
don't have FP and only IE browser are available. My only solution is to saved in
html extensions.

Ok,

First...

Does your free space have FP extensions installed or available to be
installed? If no, then you can not open the site directly in FP for edit or
managing your content, or create subwebs and/or set unique permissions (if
host allows this)

Does this free space have a control panel, that might let you set unique
permissions on a folder of your choice?

Second...

Having the FP extensions doesn't impact any one from viewing your site via a
browser, however your friends would need to have FP, if the extensions where
installed and you want them to actual change your pages on your site.

Rino,

Setting permission via CHMOD on the server only protect the files when
accessed directly on the server, not when viewing the files in a browser,
which by the way, all files are read-only when requested by a browser, as
the user can not save changes directly back to the web server.

However I haven't worked with a Unix based system in over 20 years, so if
you do a CHMOD, does the user get prompted to provide a login/password when
viewing the files, and is this why you were asking about a method where your
don't have to provide you login info?

Again, thanks for your input Steve. I am aware of the securit
issues with just using password zipped folders. However the inf
to be protected would be personally unidentifiable. you know, a lette
useing only first names, a spreadsheet with numbers that mean nothing without
a reference. The only point in locking the folder is just to prevent the casual browse
from viewing them just out of curiousity cause they are there
thanks, Rob
