Password will not work during compact and repair

My database has been encrypted and working for several months. When I attempt
to compact and repair (with the datbase either open or closed) I am asked for
the password but the password used to open the database does not work. In
addition, with the database open the "Database Tools" group shows the option
to "Encrypt The Database" as though it did not have a password in the first
place. Can anyone help me ?
