passwords dialogue

when entering a secure site I get the dialog to use my password but IE never
asks me to save the password. What needs to turned on.

In Internet Explorer, tools, Internet Options, content tab, AutoComplete button,
check "Prompt me to save passwords."

You question is more about IE than Office. However, try this:

Launch IE
Go to tools, Internet Options
Content [TAB]
Autocomplete
Fill the relevant boxes here
