past excel chart into word drawing canvas

Working in Office 2003, I want to paste several Excel charts into a drawing
canvas in Word and arrange them in some aesthetic fashion onto one page.
Every time I try pasting one in however, it doesn't "land" in the drawing
canvas but instead before it on a new page. Thanks for any ideas?

Try pasting them into the cells of a table
