Paste Special does not recognize BMP object

Hello all

I'm using MS Word 2000 on Windows 2000

I'm trying to embed a BMP file into my document using a link, sinc
the BMP file will change, and I want the current BMP image to appea
in the document each time I open it

I try the following

- "Copy" the BMP file to my Clipboard
- open MS Wor
- select "Edit" --> "Paste Special

At this point, Word should bring up a "Paste Special" dialog box, listin
the Source as a Bitmap Image (with the file name (short form)) and a
option to "Paste" or "Paste Link" AS: "Bitmap Image Object". That i
how it works on my other machines

However, on one machine, the "Paste Special" dialog box only says th
source is a "Package" (with the correct BMP filename) and will onl
allow me to "Paste/Paste Link" AS: "Package Object", which does no
work..

It seems as though Word my one machine does not recognize a BM
filetype as a Bitmap Image when I try to Paste Special it into m
document. If I try to "Paste Special" other filetypes it seems t
work OK (e.g. an XLS file will Paste in as "MS Excel Workshee
Object")

Any suggestions

Try manually inserting a link field to the bitmap image. Type this:
LINK Paint.Picture "C:\\Documents and Settings\\Owner\\My
Documents\\Filename.bmp" "" \a \p , replacing my example path and
filename with the actual path and filename of your bitmap file (yes, use
double-backslashes in the path). Then select everything from LINK to \p
(inclusive), and press Ctrl+F9. That should insert your bitmap in as a
Linked Bitmap Image Object... does it?

Hello, GnO

I tried what you suggested, but it does not seem to work, even on a machine that *does* allow me to Link to a BMP file. But let me make sure I did what you meant... I did this

- moved my BMP file to c:\billboard.bm
- opened a fresh Word documen
- on the first line, typed
LINK Paint.Picture "C:\\billboard.bmp" "" \a \
- I then Selected the entire line, and hit ctl-F

At that point, the line becomes surrounded by curly brackets, and if I Select it, I get a mouse menu that includes "Object". If I click on that, I get a Windows error that says

"The server application, source file, or item cannot be found.
Make sure the application is properly installed, and that it has
not been deleted, moved, or renamed.

The BMP file is definitely in C:\billboard.bmp, so something else is amiss. Like I said, I'm doing this on a machine that *does* allow me to link to a BMP file

Yes, it looks like you did what I suggested. Not sure why it's not
working on your computer though.

Two more ideas... (I'm on Windows XP, so the menu choices might look
slightly different on your Win2K computer.)

1. Open Windows Explorer, click on Tools | Options | File Types, and
left-click once on the BMP item in the "registered file types" list.
Click on Advanced. Enable "Use DDE" if it isn't already. Click on
Actions: edit | Edit. Which application is associated with this file
type? Do you have that application on your computer, and is the path to
that application correct? Enable "Use DDE" here too if it isn't
already. Does this fix the problem?

2. Assuming you still have MS Paint on your computer (it comes with
Windows), change the application associated with BMP files to MS Paint.
Does this fix the problem?

Hello G&O

First of all, thanks for the suggestions. Sorry I haven't bee
quicker in my responses, but I'm in Japan, so the time shift is prett
bad

Here's what I've found... I tried your hint about Enabling DDE, but
don't think that's at the root of the problem. I tried one of m
other machines running W2K, and did a "Paste Special" of a bitma
(BMP) file into a Word document... worked fine, as I described in m
first note. So I figured I would just make sure my "Windows Explore
-> Tools -> Options -> File Types" settings for BMP were set the exac
same way on the problem W2K machine

It didn't work, and I noticed that the "good" W2K machine did not hav
"Use DDE" enabled for any of the three Actions, which were "Open"
"Print", and "Print To". Both the "good" and "bad" W2K machines hav
MSPaint, which opens the files just fine when I double-click on an
BMP file

I also tried making the settings exactly the way they are on my X
machine (which works fine), also to no effect (I didn't really expec
it to... it was an act of desperation)

So, no matter what I do, the "Paste Special" action to link a BMP fil
in MS Word still says it's trying to insert a "Package Object", rathe
than recognizing it as a "Bitmap Image Object" like all my othe
machines, W2K and XP alike

I can get around this by simply doing an Insert -> Picture (As Link
in MS Word. But it just irks me when I can't explain such od
behavior

Again, thanks for your help and suggestions

Hello,

I had a similar problem in Microsoft Office 2000-SP3, when I copy 1 or
2 cell's in MS-Excel and try to Paste Special to MS-Word it does not
recognize "Microsoft Excel Worksheet object" from clipboard. It detects
"unknown source" from clipboard.

After many tests and Internet search, no lucky.
Finally, I have removed "PDF Complete" product version 3.0.4 from this
WinXP SP1 Machine and then problem disappeared.
After that, I have installed the "PDF Complete" again and the problem
has returned.

This PDF Complete was achieved with HP Workstation Hardware with
WinXP-SP1, and has the same funcionallity of Adobe Acrobat Product.

I have already submit a Ticket to PDF Creation Department Team to see
if they have a solution to this problem.

I hope this help you.

Regards,
Braulio
