Patch Package could not be opened

I upgraded my hard drive and used the Western Digital Data
Lifeguard to copy the original drive. When I try to open
Office programs I get an error - "This patch Package
couldnot be opend. Verify that the patch package exists
and that you can access it or contact the Application
Vendor to ferify that this is a falic windows patch
package."

I tried to uninstall/reinstall Office 2000 and get a
similar message.

How do I proceed?

I have done the same thing with Office XP on my Windows XP Pro and got the
same result. I even tried going back to the old drive and the result is the
same there. The Office products all work fine but the logo is a DOS logo and
I cannot repair or uninstall.
MS Support tell me they have no answer other than to reformat the drive and
install all applications from scratch.
The MS Support site, says there is a registry clean-up tool for Windows
installer versions earlier than 2.0 but Windows XP has v.2.0 and it seems
they have no such tool for that version. I feel sure there must be another
solution.
