Patches

installed a new xp pro. something happened to Office 2003. So i
installed office 2003 again but got a message like this:

Uninstalling Patch Package is not supported

So I tried to unistall first the updates to office 2003 then office 2003
itself. For all cases I got the same stupid message.

I found one solution on line which involved entering something in cnd
mode involving two 16 digit numbers you find by trying to uninstall in
the regular way. All you have to do is do this for all 9 patches plus
office 2003 itself.

Is there another solution?

Hi John,

Unlike some of the Windows security patches MS doesn't support uninstalling individual updates to MS Office. If you try to run a
repair/reinstall of Office 2003 from Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel does it succeed? If not, what is the error
message you get at that point.

No... I get the same message trying to reinstall. What I'm hearing here
is that one should never install patches to office.

Hi John,

You should definitely install the latest patches and updates for Office.
Have you been unsuccessful with uninstalling Office 2003? If you have been
unsuccessful, please let me know what steps you have done so far and any and
all error messages that have come up. Thanks!

I finally went into the registry and eliminated office 2003 as much as I
could. That cleared away everything and I could reinstall it ok. However
I used up all my reinstalls and had to talk to someone to get permission
to install it again. A real pain.

I don't see how it pays to install the updates if they cause so much
trouble.

Well, it caused me a LOT of problems and I won't be installing them
again. As soon as you install an update, I understand, you can no longer
re-install 2003 even to add or subtract something. All I did was install
a new xp-pro and I had 2-3 hours of work getting office up. I'm not
going there again.
