PCX files don't retain image size when inserting in Word XP

Susan Howe

This is a problem that wasn't a problem before.

One day when inserted a pcx file with the image dimensions
of 3 x 5 became as wide and as long as my page size. It
didn't retain the original image size.

I don't want to have to resize every pcx graphic file I
insert; there are way to many.

This isn't a problem with other graphic file formats. But
my customer requires pcx file formats.

Any suggestions?

Place a text box, frame or (or table cell) of the required *width* and the
image will fit to that width by adjusting the height of the box/frame/cell.

Thanks for that suggestion but we can't use tables or text
boxes etc in our documents per our customer requirements.
Sorry, should have made that comment in original post.

All we can do is insert the graphic on a blank page.

Still looking for answers. There is an earlier post from
someone that is having the same problem but with jpeg
files and I didn't see a fix for that post either.

My symtoms are the same and started happening the same
time as he discribed. He was going to reinstall Word but
I don't have that option since I work off a network,
unless I can get the network folks to reinstall it but I
doubt they will do that without knowing forsure that will
fix the problem. Also, how would they keep it from doing
it again.

Hi Susan,

Hmmm, generally PCX graphics have the pixels per inch
data stored in the graphic so they shouldn't be impacted
by changing the information in
Tools=>Options=>General=>[Web Options]=>/Pictures\
in a new blank document.

If you select the graphic and use Format=>Picture does
the size tab show the graphic is at 100%? Does it change
to the original size if you use the [Reset] button there?

Raster/bitmap images like PCX, JPG, TIF, etc don't really have any size.
Certain of these formats (TIFF, for example) allow you to store a size that
you choose in, say, Photoshop; then when you import the TIFF, most
well-behaved apps will respect the size you chose. Nice feature, but it
doesn't really mean that the TIFF is of any particular size, just it allows
you and the software to pretend that it is for everybody's benefit.

Some file formats don't support the notion of size at all. My guess is that
PCX is one.

when the graphic is inserted the original size triples+.
When inserting it Word shrinks it down to fit the page
boundries.
