PCX Support in Office 2003?

I understand Microsoft dropped support for PCX files in Office 2003, but can
anyone point me to exactly why that is...? I need an explanation to give my
customers who insist on sending us screen shots in PCX format for customer
support reasons. One implication I came across in one of these posts is that
it was for some sort of security reason. Can anyone elaborate?

I cannot find an article concerning Office 2003 and the PCX format, however Visio
2003 no longer support PCX, but there is no explanation on the why...
What you won't find in Microsoft Office Visio 2003
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010857571033.aspx

Download www.irfanview.com , a free viewer, it will open PCX files then you can save
the image to a more usable format. Get the plug-ins too...

Hi Ken,

A number of the graphic filters were originally acquired
from 3rd party companies who have ceased to exist or no
longer create/maintain filters for graphics and file conversions.

The way they were written (many as far back as DOS or Win3.1
'then current' times) could leave them vulnerable/exposed to
security/hacking issues. Many of those formats were not considered
widely used enough to rewrite a new filter, or there wasn't a
3rd party driver available, or the MS GDI+ graphics engine now
being used may not support certain attributes of certain graphic/
filter types. Basically, obsolescense of some older formats.

The PCXIM32.flt from prior versions of Office should still work,
but at your risk.
