Performance issues with Access 2007 and other Office apps

I have a system that is driven by VBA from Access. It uses Excel for charting
and generates reports in Word using data from Access and charts from Excel.
Programs were originally written using DAO but I've started converting them
to ADO. Part of the system is converted and runs satisfactorily with Office
2003 applications. I've recently upgraded a machine to Office 2007 but the
system quickly grinds almost to a standstill. There are visible pauses as
text is generated in Access and then written to the Word document.

Why should performance in Office 2007 be so much poorer than Office 2003?
I've tried native Office 2007 and Compatibility mode. I've noted the
Performance tips from Access 2007 Help. None of the changes makes any
difference.

I don't know what to try next, other than reverting to Office 2003.

Any advice or experience to share?
