Performance Issues with split database 2003/2007

I have a replicated split and distributed database. front end and backends
reside on local laptops. The backend is replicated and syncs with the master
database located on the network. My problem is the local front end runs very
slow on occassions and when entering data into fields that are used to
calculate it can take a very long time. I just tested and confirmed that if I
refresh using Link Manager the front and back ends performance improves
significantly.

Can anyone suggest any method of generally improving performance.

Additionally I am getting an occassional error messages saying 'Could not
Upate currently locked by another session on this machine'. There is not
other session open as this is being run entirely locally for both front end
and back end. Could it be related in some way the the back end tables.

Any help with these problems will be really appreciated

The file on the LAN and the FOLDER it resides in MUST have read\write\edit\
and delete rights for every user, otherwise it will think two users are using
the same file. Make sure the BE and LDB are updated. Compile the database.
Compact and repair the database. Then check the speed of your nics and your
network.
