Phantom Task - can't get rid of it

I have a published enterprise project in project server 2003 using Project
pro 2003. At some point in the history of the project, there was a task
assigned to a resource and published the project. This task has since been
removed from the project plan, but the user continues to get a daily
reminder to complete the past due task.
I have Republished the entire project and can not figure out how to get rid
of this invisible task.
Any ideas?

I have the same problems as described by Mike, but then for tasks that
have not been deleted, they still exist in my project. I have
republished the entire project. I have overwritten the actuals by
updating them from Outlook. Any ideas?

As a last resort you could try to save the plan off as an mpp and delete the
project from the server from PWA Admin>Clean Up Project Server Database.
Then re-import your plan and re-publish.
