Phantom unread news item

Sometimes Entourage will boldface a newsgroup's mailbox/folder/server line
(including this group's) as though there's an unread news item in it.
However, View is set to Unread Only and shows no messages in it: "There are
no unread messages in this folder." If I click on Mark All Read the boldface
will go away as expected. But why am I getting the unread news item
indication when Entourage shows no new posts?

This depends on the news server. I find it happens a lot with some servers,
never at all on others.

A similar effect occurs in IMAP folders occasionally.

I don't think this is unique to entourage, but it may be.

Is it possible you have a filter set to not display some spam messages, but
not to mark the messages as read???

Just guessing,

I'm experiencing the same problem, and no, there's no filter. Right now for
instance, I switched back to the Word newsgroup, and even though every
message had been read (or at least marked as read), the newsgroup name in
the list turned bold and indicated that there were two unread messages,
which clearly was not the case. There were no new messages either, so I
don't know why Entourage is behaving like this. As Barry said, this might be
related to the news server, but I can't verify this, since I'm only posting
on Microsoft newsgroups. Though I should add that I've never experienced
anything like this with my IMAP folders.

I use the SBC Global news server and it just started happening here a few
weeks ago. It clearly has nothing to do with rules (as I have none on
news). I really is annoying.

Windows Outlook Express users complain about it (loudly) all the time.

Using MT-Newswatcher, I've never seen these "ghosts".

No filters whatsoever. I also access same newsgroups from two different
ISPs/servers. Same problem.
